Together with the Slate Mountains, the Franconian Forest and the Fichtelgebirge, the Thuringian Forest forms the Thuringian-Franconian Low Mountains, which extends from the Werra to the Czech border.

The low mountain range is protected as a nature park Thuringian Forest as a whole. The core area, the Thuringian Forest Biosphere Reserve, is even more strictly protected.
